This summer 16 students aged 8-12 yrs old enjoyed a week of creativity. Participants developed skills sketching, designing, watercolour painting and creating wire sculptures. Nutritious snacks and drinks were served daily. Art instructor, Paula Almond, guided participants through their projects, providing demonstrations and one-to-one support. This summer, three secondary school student volunteers assisted with setting up, cleaning up and student mentoring. Each student helper received a certificate for 20 volunteer hours. The program began with sketching, figure drawing and experimenting with water colour paints. The main project required creating a watercolour undersea scene that used a variety of painting techniques. Sea creatures, mermaids and plants were painted separately, cut out and arranged on their underwater backgrounds. The results were spectacular. The first wire sculpture project involved designing and making an original paper clip. Students learned to use cutting and bending tools in preparation for their main sculpture. Using jewelry wire, crystal beads and stones, each participant fashioned a tree. They are now proudly displayed at home. Our program promotes art appreciation and allows participants to choose the techniques and colours that they will use. All projects are valued for their skill and originality. As you peruse the attached pictures you will note the value of Art Camp in our community. We employ a professional artist to plan and implement our program. Six retired women teachers volunteer their time to organize the camp, buy supplies, provide snacks, mentor students and carry out the registration process. We are able to provide a high quality experience at the lowest possible price. We are a not-for-profit group and the grant we received helped to hire our instructor and to pay for some of our supplies and snacks. We appreciate your interest and support as we endeavour to provide a valuable and valued experience for local children. On behalf of our director, Mary Milne, our volunteers and campers, I thank you for your continued interest and support.
